The Office of the Chief Veterinarian (CVO), under the Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development, is seeking an experienced animal welfare professional who is able to provide operational support to Manitoba’s Animal Welfare Program. The Provincial Animal Welfare Technician will provide technical expertise to Animal Protection Officers (APOs) throughout the province as well as manage and respond to animal welfare case investigations.
• The candidate must have a strong and recent clinical experience in a veterinary clinic setting and be able to provide medical oversight to companion animals and livestock in the care of the CVO, including conducting initial physical exams, collecting samples, administering vaccines, etc.
• The incumbent must have excellent organizational skills and be able to triage cases with private veterinary clinics, humane societies, provincial animal welfare veterinarians, animal rescue organizations and APOs.
• To support the significant level of case management, reporting, inspections, investigations, and legal documentation in the branch, the candidate must have exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Post-secondary education in animal welfare and behaviour, animal health technology, or a law enforcement background would be an asset.
• The incumbent should be able to regularly travel throughout the province to conduct inspections, move or assess animals, and attend legal proceedings. They will also share evening, weekend and holiday on-call coverage with other members of the team.
